When A “Safe Room” wasn’t Enough
A woman lost her entire life savings in Colleton County this past Tuesday due to a home intruder. They had valuable that were estimated to be worth more than $200,000. The woman who owned the property that was stolen was Anne Thomas. She is a 73 year old homeowner, and her quotes about the incident are harrowing. She was quoted saying “I just started screaming because I knew it was everything we had. She came home with her daughters to find the door forced open and all of her gold, silver coins, and cash largely inherited from her late husband was gone. She had planned to give the valuables to her daughter in order to take care of her medical expenses. Her daughter was diagnosed with severe autism, and her condition requires year around care. She is grieving over the fact that her daughters will no longer be taken care of when she passes. It’s a devastating loss, and are thoughts and prayers are with Anne Thomas.
Could A Real Safe Room Have Prevented This?
The reason that a large majority of her most valuable items were kept in her house was due to the fact that they were larger items and difficult to store. There were also some personal documents stolen from the room that Thomas refers to as the “safe room.” Not many people anticipate a home intruder with a mission to clean out a house in the middle of the country. There is an extensive investigation underway, due to the fact that many people believe that the intruder was someone who knew what Thomas had and knew were it was kept. They even managed to break into her safe, which is shown in the video above. It’s likely they knew what they would be up against. A safe may deter some criminals, but this incident goes to show that’s not enough for all of them. It’s a terrible story, but here is still hope that the family will be able to recover, and they have posted a Go Fund Me page here. We are in no way affiliated with the Thomas family, but we encourage whatever support you can give.
She called her back room where she kept the large majority of her items the “Safe Room,” but it was not in fact the Safe Room that she needed. Unfortunately, the majority of this could’ve been avoided if Thomas had only had a safe room. It’s events like these that awaken some of us to the truth of the hard times our country faces currently. We are forced as citizens to take our protection into our own hands when even a rural home in a small town like the one Thomas lived in is subject to abhorrent criminal behavior.
