Just yesterday morning, three twisters struck Northern Texas. The residents did not receive an alert of the tornadoes arrival. Homes were destroyed by tornadoes, and multiple people were injured and hospitalized. The tornadoes came early in the morning, before most were even awake. The storms came through Johnson County, and caused extensive property damage. This aspect is unfortunate specifically due to the lack of a warning by the National Weather Service. The National Weather Service will most likely respond with an explanation as to why there was no alert. They have not responded yet, due to the recent nature of the event.
Many people have the misconception that a tornadoes’ arrival will be announced long before it happens. This is not true. In the most optimistic outlook, a family in the area of effect by a tornado will have less than 10 minutes to get to safety. The National Weather Service consistently improves in their response time and alert service every year. Unfortunately, there’s very little that we can do to drastically improve the prediction rate.
