Last spring, more than 900 people in Ohio lost their home or business when an unprecedented 21 tornados tore through several communities.
The carnage from this impressive line of storms was part of a larger tornado outbreak that gripped the Midwest for nearly two weeks. Casualties, however, were minimized by a vigilant early-warning system that undoubtedly saved countless lives.
As the storms swiftly departed, residents were left to sift through the debris as they tried to piece together some trace of the life they once knew. Dayton, Ohio bore an eerily resemblance to a warzone, as flattened residences now dominated the surrounding community’s once endearing and profound profile.
Safety for some, but not for all…
To help alleviate some of this suffering and to prevent future casualties from similar storms, the Ohio Safe Room Rebate Program is once again gearing up the application process to offer funding for those who want to construct a bunker or safe room. The program offers up to a 75 percent rebate to those who want to construct a tornado shelter on their property.
As you could imagine, demand for the program is high and it is estimated that out of the thousands of applications emergency management officials will receive, only 100 will be chosen at random by a computer. That’s right. A computer could ultimately determine who lives and dies during a tornado.
Don’t leave your safety up to chance, invest in modular steel safe room protection today!
At U.S. Safe Room, we don’t believe anyone should have to play the lottery to receive top rated steel protection. Relying on random selection in the case of letting a computer decide your fate is more like playing Russian roulette!
We get this question at least once a week: how could I possibly afford a bomb shelter or safe room on my budget?
Practical and affordable protection should never be a luxury item. We firmly believe that everyone is entitled basic level protection from severe storms, as well as from domestic and international threats. Still, a chasm exists between those who can afford protection and for those who cannot.
What are your funding options?
While it is true that safe rooms and underground bunkers are not an easy expenditure to work in as a line item on anyone’s budget, we should all be comforted to know that financial assistance is available. Fortunately, grants and funding opportunities exist for individuals wishing to build a residential safe room. To learn more about project eligibility and financial assistance, you can contact your State Hazard Mitigation Officer. This person can apprise you on how your project could receive federal funding. Each state has one. Just click on the letter heading with your state and get to work!
FHA Mortgage Insured Financing
As a proactive measure to counter the growing tenacity and strength of storms – along with public sentiment on government intervention – HUD began allowing borrowers to include storm shelters as eligible work items for FHA 203(k) rehabilitation loans.
