Here are a few things with which to prepare your safe room for a lengthy stay.
Note: Storing Potable (Drinkable) Water
It is recommended that you store one gallon of water, per person, per day. If you are using 2-liter bottles, two of these bottles satisfies the requirements for one person, one day. While it is impossible to predict how long you will have to remain in your underground shelter, we recommend you stock up on enough water for two weeks – at the very least.
Prepping Your Underground Shelter
Make sure your safe room or bunker is equipped with the following. This list is not exhaustive.
- Sleeping bag/Cot
- Blankets, Pillows
- Easy-to-prepare food
- Water (see above)
- First Aid
- Medicines
- Flashlights
- Batteries
- Walkie-Talkie/Radio
- Weather Radio
- Space Heater
- Fan, Air Filter
Each of these items has a specific use for your survival. You never know how long you’ll be staying in your safe room, you should have enough medicine and provisions to live for a few weeks—maybe even a few months. Make sure your underground shelter is equipped with these items at all times. In the event of a natural disaster, you may not have the time to rush around the house grabbing the necessary materials.
