We always attempt to explain to our customers that just because tornadoes don’t frequently hit your area, it doesn’t mean that they won’t eventually. The county just down the mountain from our headquarters was recently hit by a severe storm, knocking out power to around twenty-two thousand customers of Duke Power. The schools were closed for two days, and didn’t open back up until today with a two hour delay. The residents are just starting to get their bearings back after what was a harrowing experience. My own Mother was caught in the middle of town where she works in Wilkesboro during the storm, and she said she had never seen weather like it before in her life.
Every single state in this country has been hit with a tornado. It’s not exclusive to the midwestern states, it’s everywhere folks, and it shows signs of increasing in unpredictability and frequency. No one was truly prepared for what happened so close to our headquarters, and the devastation is alien to Wilkes County. Hugo came through several years ago and caused much destruction, but this storm came in the night and left just as rudely as it arrived. The photos below are from Wilkesboro, Boone, and Allegheny where the storm left the worst of it’s damage.

Weather.com reports the facts of the storm as,
- Severe storms left widespread damage in parts of the Carolinas Monday evening.
- The National Weather Service confirmed 11 tornadoes in the Carolinas and Virginia.
- Eight minor injuries were reported, but no deaths.
It’s amazing that so many tornadoes formed so quickly in an area not known for them. We urge all of our customers to take us serious when we explain that tornadoes can strike anywhere and at seemingly any time. The rural areas near our office are particularly susceptible, as the nearest safe house or area of refuge is far away. If you live out in the middle of nowhere and a tree falls on your house, you could be in serious danger. It’s currently unknown as to how many trees fell on homes and cars as a result of the wind speeds and debris of this storm, but we’ve heard from many that number is very high.
