December Tornado: Marion County, Mississippi
Tornado season may exist, but tornadoes can happen at any time.
We expect tornadoes to occur most often in spring or summer, because that’s the duration of tornado season. Which means they can’t happen any other time of year. Right? Wrong. Tornadoes can happen in winter. And they have.
Marion County, Mississippi experienced a December tornado in 2014. It happened December 23. There were 5 total deaths.
The 5th death occurred in Orange Beach, MS; the CEO of Mississippi-based Hudson’s Inc. passed away due to tornado-related injuries, 4 days after the tornado struck.
Importance of Being Prepared
Tornado Season Preparation
The Mississippi tornado struck outside of tornado season. Its timing was worsened by the fact that so few people could have anticipated it. The tornado caused so much damage in Marion and Jones counties that officials had to close roads for hours. Destruction of homes, businesses, and vehicles resulted in multiple injuries and deaths. A single death or injury is too much, but some didn’t even get a warning. For some, the only warning was a nearby siren.
But once you hear the siren, what do you do? It’s important to have a safe place to retreat. Going home is useless, if the December tornado blows through your neighborhood. Even if your place of business is destroyed, protecting your family is the foremost concern in the event of a December tornado.
