It seems that every week, we hear about another severe storm or tornado touching down somewhere in America. These chaotic weather events can be incredibly frightening and stressful, and for good reason. Tornadoes kill dozens, if not hundreds, of people each year. They also cause billions in property damage and can destroy a home and a lifetime of memories in just seconds.
Midway through February, much of the United States has had to deal with heavy precipitation or other severe weather. The Oroville Dam in California suffered major structural damage to its spillways following record rainfall across northern California. That same dam was again subjected to massive stresses after another several inches of rain fell late last week. Those living up north found themselves in the path of significant winter weather. Thousands in Texas felt the effect of severe thunderstorms and tornadoes.
Tornado Strikes Southern Texas
Storms ripped through southern Texas overnight on Sunday, leaving thousands either without power or without a home altogether. Several were injured, more than 150 homes were damaged and over 46,000 residents were without power in the San Antonio area. Some victims described the storm as something they had never experienced before. They said that they immediately knew that something was wrong as the storms were beginning to pick up. Roofs were torn off of houses, swingsets were lifted and tossed away without a trace, and thousands of vehicles were damaged.
One family of five said they hid under a mattress to stay safe from the storm. They described it as having tornado-like winds as it beared down on their home in San Antonio sunday night. Thunderstorms and heavy rain continue to advance east, dumping precipitation in eastern Texas and southern Louisiana later Monday.
