Storm bunkers may be a more important investment than you think.
When it comes to severe and deadly weather bearing down on your home, few things are as terrifying and chaotic as a tornado. Unfathomably strong winds, deadly flying debris, and earth-trembling power make these some of the most devastating atmospheric phenomena on our planet. Staying safe during a tornado is no easy task. Running to safety is rarely an option and there are very few secure places to hide. Unfortunately, residents in the southeastern US were barraged with severe thunderstorms this past week. In Georgia, a tornado accompanied these violent storms; the deadly tandem took the lives of 14 people.
Deadly Storms Across the Southeast
According to CNN, the storms that ravaged the region left at least 18 people dead (including the 14 from Georgia alone). At least seven were killed in a southern Georgia mobile home park after a tornado leveled much of the community. Another five people remain missing from the mobile home park as authorities continue to search for victims and clean up after the tragedy. Residents who survived said they experience a few moments of terror and emerged from their hiding places to find cars overturned, homes destroyed, and debris scattered everywhere. Utility workers have been working continuously to restore power to residents and repair other damaged infrastructure.
The Georgia Governor issued a state of emergency in seven south Georgia counties. He has also said that the state will seek federal assistance as well. The National Weather Service had issued a rare “high-risk” alert for these severe thunderstorms. This was the first high-risk alert issued for the area since June 2014. Following the storm, a tornado watch was put into effect for many populated areas in Georgia and Florida, including Atlanta as well as Tallahassee and Panama City. These watches remained in effect until the end of the weekend.
Another deadly tornado struck in Mississippi, killing four and injuring more than 50. Authorities said that most damage was near the cities of Hattiesburg and Petal. The Mississippi Governor also declared a state of emergency. President Donald Trump even reached out to local government to offer his condolences. Damage estimates for the storms and tornadoes have not yet been released, although some speculate they could easily top $10 million.
