Two Ways to be Prepared for an Emergency or Disaster
When disaster or an emergency strikes you always want to be ready to protect those you love. You can get protection from severe weather with a bunker from U.S. Safe Room but it is what you keep inside that is so very important. To be prepared you need to stock up on food supplies.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommends that every household have at least a 2 week supply of food and water, on average American’s only have 3 days worth! Two weeks worth of food is a lot to buy and store but it can be broken down into four easy steps.
- Plan – make a list of potential meals. Buying a lot of random food does you no good if they can not create a meal or keep everyone fed.
- Buy – take that list to the grocery store and stock up! It will look like a lot of food but when you are cold, tired, or hurt from the disaster you will be glad you have enough food to keep everyone healthy.
- Preserve – This could be the most important step. Once you have the food you will need to preserve it so it is good for a few years. You will want to buy things that can be preserved for several years because you never know when you will encounter a disaster and when it is almost there everyone will be in panic mode.
- Organize – What good was all that hard work if you do not know where anything is? By organizing your food you can start effectively using it now, you don’t have to wait until a disaster to start benefiting from your food storage today.
This process may take a little bit and can and will be different for every family in different areas because we are all preparing for something different. It is okay to take a little time to come up with a system that works for you and your family!
