Weather Service confirms monster New Orleans tornado was an EF-3 that hit last Tuesday. There were actually multiple tornadoes in the rea, some hitting Louisiana, and the same places in Eastern New Orleans that were so severely damaged by hurricane Katrina. As unfortunate as these tornadoes were, no one anticipated the damage that they’d do. Wednesday officials from the area surveyed the damage as the National Weather Service first asserted that the tornado was an EF-3. Many homes had there roofs torn off, and metal electricity transmission lines were bent and damaged throughout the area. Even as the tornado was tearing through these homes however, storm chases tracked it across the region. The NWS with information from the chasers gave stern warnings of severe tornadoes throughout the area, and after the fact determined that three touched down and nearly five hit. Lousiana was also hit with an EF-1, but that rating is subject to change as damaged is still being assessed.
In New Orleans, many people were injured. The Mayor Mitch Landrieu stated dozens of people were injured but most of the injuries were luckily minor in nature. All in all, he said he was “impressed that so few people were injured and there was no loss of life.” Government facilities were also harmed in New Orleans by the tornado, with NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility taking structural damage and losing power throughout it’s campus. There was believed to be a gas leak after the damage took place, and all employees were asked to leave. Most people don’t realize NASA still does a considerable amount for space-faring and exploration, including the construction of a deep-space rocket. NASA reported after the storms that cleared that the tornado was not damaged, although the building that houses the rocket had “large gaping holes in the walls and roof.”
Mother and Car Seat Saves Child’s Life
In a ray of hope and good news, a woman has an uplifting story on how she saved her child during the tornado in New Orleans. Amanda Stockfelt was flung into the air while holding her baby in a car seat. She clutched the baby tight to her as the tornado whipped her through it’s vortex, and she managed to keep the baby safe throughout the chaos. When asked about the event she said “All I could think of was don’t let go of her car seat because if I let go of her car seat, I just knew the tornado was going to take her and I would never be able to find her.” Amanda was at work when the tornado hit, and she had brought her daughter to work that day because she had to take the baby to a doctor’s appointment. When the tornado was headed for her in her office in a trailer, she strapped the baby into the car seat after thinking quickly. The only thing she could think to do at the time was hold the baby close to her in the car seat and hope for the best. She said when the tornado hit the trailer it was like the trailer “exploded,” which then flung her through the air where she saved her baby. When the dust finally cleared and they landed, the baby wasn’t crying, which scared Amanda the most. She mentioned that she thought maybe some internal injury was preventing the baby from crying. The baby was unharmed, and they’re both receiving immense support from the community in every way.
