The southern United States can’t catch a break. Killer tornadoes have become a fact of life for the embattled region. As soon as the flood waters recede and the horizons of a fragmented sky give away once again to sunshine, weather forecasters issue yet another tornado warning. Tornadoes have made an appearance in almost every southern state this spring. From deep Alabama to the Carolina coast, capricious storms have caused millions of dollars in destruction and claimed several lives. Over the weekend, two more people died when an EF3 tornado ransacked the St. Landry Parish early Saturday morning. Eight homes were completely destroyed and locals are still trying to piece together exactly what happened.
“It’s really unbelievable. You really have to see it to understand what happened out here. Several homes have been moved off their foundations and others have had their roofs pulled off. One house was moved and placed completely onto the road,”
St. Landy Parish President Jessie Bellard. USA Today
Drone footage from the tornado’s path reveal a complete wasteland. Cars were toppled and thrown on their sides with little regard for life and property. Uprooted trees were strewn across a once bountiful landscape that had just come into spring bloom. Windspeeds that topped out well above 100 miles per hour peeled back roofs on homes, revealing a skeletal undercarriage that eerily resembled a human ribcage. Rescue workers helplessly sifted through the damage as they searched for any possible sign of life. The person who lost their life during the storm was likely thrown from his residence, authorities said. In all likelihood, the man didn’t have a storm shelter or tornado safe room at his home. Killer tornadoes, such as these, have become an all too common and unnerving reality in our nation’s heartland.
