In late May, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration made a statement about this year’s upcoming hurricane season. They made a prediction that this hurricane season will not have the normal number of hurricanes. Due to the water currents, the number of hurricanes should be “below normal.” Even though the hurricane season may not have the numbers, the storms can be just as strong.
They stated, “A below-normal season doesn’t mean we’re off the hook. As we’ve seen before, below-normal seasons can still produce catastrophic impacts to communities.” In fact in we can look back at the 1992 hurricane season. Only seven storms had formed that year but the first was hurricane Andrew, a category 5 storms that destroyed southern Florida.
Some counties in Florida are now asking their residents to prepare for the storm season. Giving tips and links to residents about preparation, they are planning for the worst. This year it is projected that there is a 70% chance for 6-11 large storms with 3-6 of those becoming hurricanes. It is also predicted that two of the hurricanes will be a category 3 or more.
