The Doomsday Clock is ticking closer to midnight.
With every failed negotiation by the world’s nuclear powers, the international community is skidding closer to proverbial midnight on the infamous Doomsday Clock. Largely symbolic, the clock is analogous to a pulse on world events and how close we are to the collapse of human civilization.
Initially developed following the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, the Doomsday Clock is as much as a metaphor as it is a gauge on the state of our political climate. The same scientists who had worked tirelessly on the Manhattan Project also wanted to create a black box warning on this nuclear prescription, so that other members of the international community would not abuse this so-called remedy to alleviate world disputes. The “Doomsday Clock” was set in place to prevent such an epidemic.
Simplistic in nature, the Doomsday Clock has sought out to impress upon us the true gravity of nuclear proliferation and what society can do to voice its concerns of atomic warfare on world leaders. For every dire circumstance that leads us to the brink of nuclear warfare, scientists move the long arm of the clock closer to midnight. The United States withdrawal from treaties on nuclear weapons or the acquirement and advances in bomb technology would theoretically justify the bump-up in time. An ease in tension would therefore set the clock further back.
The awesome power of nuclear weapons
Mankind sits at the precipice of an ‘eureka’ like moment. With such tremendous power to propel humanity to unrealized heights, we’ve also become oblivious to our mortality and how precariously close we have come to obliterating the tapestry of society. Essentially, the “Doomsday Clock” acts like a speedometer for humanity. It tells us when we are moving to fast and if we don’t let off the gas pedal a little bit; we could quickly find ourselves on a collision course with another reckless driver.
Currently, the clock is sitting just two minutes before midnight. Strained relations between world superpowers and further advancements by the nuclear status quo, including the continued belligerent nature of North Korea has put us well within the two-minute warning with no timeouts remaining. Not since the Cuban Missile Crisis has the world flirted so dangerous close to utter destruction. To give a little more scope to the breadth of the clock’s range, the furthest the clock was sat to midnight was 17 minutes, shortly after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
U.S. Safe Room adds security and peace of mind
We can’t say for certainty if the clock will tick closer to the dreaded hour of destruction this year, but a survey of world events isn’t exactly indicative of added time either. While we can’t pump brakes on the actions of world leaders, we can buckle our seat belts a little tighter in anticipation of a world collision.
Ever since the advent of the atomic bomb, man has looked for ways to protect himself from this awesome point of reckoning. During the Cold War, many nations – fearing a nuclear Holocaust – built fallout shelters for government officials. Civilians began developing smaller, more personalized versions of these shelters for their homes. Today, bomb shelters have become a mainstay in homes nationwide.
At U.S. Safe Room, we understand this added assurance that so many of us crave, but seldomly act upon. Why is that? Many people are worried about the cost of the shelter, but reinforced steel protection is more affordable than you might think.
